Speech Pathology Degrees, And How To Obtain One
Speech pathology degrees are very difficult to obtain, because you are dealing with a branch of medicine which is complex and has many different variations. The American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) has laid down the requirements for qualifying as a speech pathologist, and these requirements are testing to say the least. This is not a career to choose unless you are totally dedicated to the task. Certainly, do not even think about this career if you are motivated purely by money, even though the financial rewards are considerable. To make this career work for you, you will need to have a genuine interest in helping people, and a genuine empathy with their problems.
To become a graduate of speech pathology, you will need to be able to devote two full years of your time to the task of learning before you can even begin to treat a patient in the real world. This extensive learning time is necessary because there are so many possible causes for every speech defect, and you will need to be able to recognize them and deal with them all. Speech pathology graduate programs need to be this thorough because you will be going out into the world to practice on real people, albeit under the tutelage of a supervisor with many years of experience.
The next stage of your quest for a speech pathology Masters is the most difficult to overcome. You will now have to deal with the public one on one as if you were a fully fledged practitioner. Your supervisor is there to help you, and prevent any serious mistakes being made, but he will also be watching you to see how you perform in any given situations. Your supervisor and the university will be on your side, because the profession needs all of the qualified practitioners it can get. There is a shortage, and it is projected to worsen over the coming decade.
If you can prove good enough to deal with the many different types of speech problem which come your way, you can assume that you are on the way to achieving your speech pathology Ph.D. Although the task won't be completed yet, your performance in the real world is what matters above all else. You will still have to pass the written examination which will come at the end of your year in practice under a supervisor, but that should be no problem once you have the practical experience.
If you can complete the written examination successfully, you will have won your speech Masters. You will now be able to enter the rewarding and challenging career of speech pathologist in your own right. The biggest challenge will come with the sheer variety of cases you will encounter. Many speech defects are rooted in the mind, and will need long and considerate treatment before any progress can be seen. Others are purely physical in nature, and will need a totally different approach. Students have much to look forward to once they complete their speech pathology degrees.
