How To Go About Obtaining Your Speech Pathology Degree

A speech pathology degree is necessary if you wish to practice as a speech pathologist. Although speech pathologists are regulated by each individual state, the Federal Government has now laid down laws for the overall administration of speech pathology. It is a very difficult career to break into, with very high demands, but is very rewarding for those who make it. To pass the examination and earn the right to have the letters CCC after your name will take years of study and practice. You will need to complete two years of post graduate work, and then complete a clinical fellowship year.

The speech language pathologist degree involves studying and working for a full year under the supervision of someone already qualified and experienced in the field. The degree is one of the most demanding you can undertake, as it requires many hours of study, and also many hours of supervised practical application. There are so many different aspects which you need to be competent in, that it is a career you can only undertake if you have the highest possible level of dedication. Each case is different, and needs a tailored individual plan. It takes a high degree of knowledge and experience to be able to work out such a plan for a wide variety of patients.

As a speech pathology undergraduate, your primary task will be the two years of intense study you will need to put in. These two years will decide how well you adjust to the practical year which follows. During this year, you will be under pressure as never before, as you will be under the watchful eye of a supervisor with years of experience. This will be at a time when you will be constantly needing to think about the program you are developing for the patient who is seeing you. You have enough to think about, that is for sure. Just remember that the supervisor, although he has to be strict and report the truth, is on your side.

Speech pathology schools are there to create successful therapists, so they want you to succeed. During the coming decade, there are likely to be many more positions available than there are qualified people to fill them, so be assured that the schools definitely want you to succeed. It is a tough program. As well as the usual scientific medical studies, you also need to have a knowledge of phonetics and linguistics in order to be able to help everyone who comes to you.

Speech pathology programs are tailored to the needs of the individual, and while it is perfectly possible to have practitioners specializing in different branches of the field, it is much better to have one qualified individual with an all encompassing knowledge of the field. The great advantage of the tough schedule a speech pathologist has to face is that once they have come through it, there is really nothing they cannot handle. They are set up for life in a career which will not be going away any time soon, and they can look forward to many fulfilling years having won their speech pathology degree.
