How To Qualify For Speech Pathologist Jobs, And Where To Obtain One

Speech pathologist jobs are not easy occupations to earn a living, as the qualifying requirements for the industry are very stringent and difficult to attain. Once you are qualified, however, you should have little difficulty finding work as there is such an extreme shortage of qualified pathologists. There are only a hundred thousand qualified pathologists across the entire United States, and that is nowhere near enough to meet the demand from the population. This trend is expected to worsen over the next decade, as more people become aware of the need to tackle speech problems right at the start.

Because it is not an easy career to follow through, and also due to a shortage of such personnel across the entire country, speech language pathologist jobs pay well. Once you are qualified, it is unlikely that you will ever be facing a long period of time out of work, or that your family will ever have to know hardship. If money is your major motivation for choosing the career, however, it is unlikely that you will succeed. The rewards are not as high as they would be in many commercial jobs, and the route to qualification is much harder. To make a success of a speech pathologist career, you need to have a genuine interest in people who are suffering from speech difficulties, and a genuine desire to help them.

Speech pathology employment demands that you undertake and finish a very long course of preparation. This preparation involves an initial period of two years, during which you will be completing your post graduate studies. During this time, there will be no actual work on real patients. It is vital to learn as much of the theory as possible before you begin actual practice, as there are so many different types of ailment and so many different causes you will have to deal with.

Once you have completed the post graduate study, you will then have to follow the most important year of your entire career. This will involve you in actual work with real patients, under the supervision of a qualified expert. This supervisor is there to help and guide you through your initial attempts to treat real patients. Although you will be being marked and assessed, it is important to realize that the supervisor is there to help, and wants you to succeed. Speech pathologists are rare, and people within the industry genuinely want to see new people come through and succeed.

Jobs in speech language pathology are available to anyone who successfully completes the program of post graduate study, and the year in the field, provided they can pass the exam at the end of the course. Once this is done, they are able to use the letters CCC after their name, and set up an independent private practice. There are so many different types of speech problem which are dealt with by pathologists, that the training has to be this thorough. Some are caused solely by mental factors, and others purely by physical ones, often as a result of a prior illness. A varied day is one of the great benefits of speech pathologist jobs.
