What The Role Of Pediatric Speech Pathologist Entails, And How To Become One
A pediatric speech pathologist is a more specific occupation with speech pathology exclusively dealing with children. Although in many ways thee is little difference between this job and the overall job of speech pathologist, the fact that children are involved does mean that there are some unique challenges. As a child's body is in the development stage, it can develop problems suddenly at any stage, especially if it has been inherently weakened as a result of premature childbirth. Neurological problems can also surface at any stage, and these can be exceptionally difficult to deal with. Many speech defects which relate to mental problems are far more easily treated if they are caught early on.
The many advantages of taking up the intensely challenging and difficult training to work towards to be a speech pathologist is that you have plenty of decisions to make there after. Once you have completed your year in the field as a trainee under supervision, you can choose where you want to apply for work. As the field has a shortage of personnel, there is rarely any problem for a trained pathologist to get the type of job they are looking for. You can choose to work exclusively with children of that is something which will satisfy you, but make sure that you do think long and hard about this.
A speech therapy program for children is technically different from the more usual adult programs, because many of the causes of speech problems known to adults are virtually unknown with children. Strokes, especially, hardly ever affect young people, and they are one of the highest overall causes of speech difficulties. Many child speech problems are due to problems which either occurred at childbirth, or before childbirth. These problems often cause dysphagia, which is every bit as common in children as it is in adults.
Speech pathologist training programs will always include in their syllabus both adult and child pathology, where eventually the graduate has a full range of options upon completing their education and becoming qualified for the job. There is no shortage of time for everything to be covered, as the requirements of the American Speech Language Hearing Association are very strict. Firstly, you need to complete two years of post gradate study, which is pure classroom learning and involves no practical experience with real patients. Then, when that has been completed, you will have to complete a year as an employee under supervision, which will be the best possible test of how well you have learned the material you will have studied.
The speech program which you need to follow is different in every individual case. There is no substitute for experience, and that can only be gained by years of practice. This is one of the reasons why the year you complete under supervision is so important. Although you cannot hope to reach full maturity in one year, the supervisor can help you learn the basics of the job, and give you the basis from which to build your career. Once you are qualified, you can choose to specialize and develop in depth knowledge of one specific branch of the discipline. If you love children, you may well find great reward in a career as a pediatric speech pathologist.
